Jean Velut - Aube, Cotes des Bars, Montgueux

Denis and Anne Velut’s tiny 7.7 hectare organic farm resides in Montgueux, a singular terroir for its combination of soils found in no other part of Champagne. Concentrated ancient chalk soils have always dictated that, in contrast to typical Aube plantings, Chardonnay dominates here. Indeed, Montgueux has long been a source of high-quality Chardonnay. What makes the wines produced solely of Montgueux fruit unique is that the racy cut of chalky minerality is here infused with smoky gunflint that results from the presence of silex. This geological anomaly gives rise to wines of distinct, mysterious charm. Velut uses no chemical fertilizers and is a third generation winemaker from a family whose viticultural history spans centuries.
